Meet Haven, Our New Chinese Exchange Student

Last week, we welcomed a new exchange student from Guiyang, China: Haven Yang! This sophomore arrived at LAX on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 PM after an 11 hour, 13 minute direct flight from Beijing to Los Angeles (not including a 3 hour flight from Guiyang to Beijing). Despite the 16 hour time change and the long flight, Haven is a determined student ready for her new American high school experience.
The first word that comes to Haven’s mind when she hears the word, “America” is “friendly.” During her visit to America …

Movie Review: Cop Out

I am somewhat of an embarrassment. Actually, I am really embarrassing and, therefore, it is quite strange that I have real human beings for friends and not just my special imaginary buddies. Part of what makes me such an embarrassment is my laugh. It is quite possibly the loudest, most obnoxious thing to ever exist. I even know it is positively intolerable and, it is coming out of my mouth! So I felt really bad for my fellow comrades when we went to see Cop Out this past weekend. But …

The Show Must Go On!

By: Kate Walters and Ramtin Mehrvijeh
“Three minutes for the chamber orchestra!” Mr. Wei declared in the green room filled with SMES’ very own student performers. Last Saturday night, February 20, St. Margaret’s threw their annual fundraiser at the lovely St. Regis Resort. Before I get started, I want to dispel the notion that the college process is going to be hard for everyone.  This rumor is solely a mental distortion created by teenagers and parents who have nothing else to worry about other than academics. In reality, the difficulty of this process and your senior year depends on you.

St. Margaret’s Expansion: “Better, Not Bigger”

On March 2, 2010 the San Juan Capistrano City Council voted on a proposition that would allow St. Margaret’s to expand the size of the campus by 70,000 square feet and add about three percent more students to the overall body of the school. Passed unanimously, the school will now be able to move foward with construction plans to expand academic and extracurricular opportunities for our students.  Over the past several years, the explosion of 7 major private schools in San Juan Capistrano alone has caused concern for traffic congestion and …

The Wolfman: Anything But Scary

Looking to add another movie to my extensive collection of vampire and werewolf movies, I went to go see The Wolfman, directed by Joe Johnston (who has also directed Jumanji, Jurassic Park Three, and Hidalgo). Word around the senior quad was that the movie was scary, so I was looking forward to spend some of my hard earned cash on a good scare.  I thought that a werewolf movie jam packed with great actors such as Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Hugo Weaving couldn’t …
