Today, the entire St. Margaret’s community gathered in the Pasternack Field House to watch Mariachi Sol de México de Jóse Hernàndez perform cultural songs including “Guadalajara.”
From the Preschool students gathered in front to the Upper School students in the bleachers, the audience was moved and engaged by the passion of the music performed by this masterful and internationally renowned mariachi group. The performance ended with a standing ovation.
The instrumental talents of Sol de México de Jóse Hernàndez are diverse, and today 12 members of the group performed on trumpet, harp, guitar, violin and bass, with vocal performances from several members supporting the tremendous talents of Jóse Hernàndez.
Although some mariachi groups perform with fewer members, Jóse Hernàndez believes that the full ensemble that performed today reveals the musicianship and diversity of mariachi, and shows “how versatile the songs can be, from romantic to upbeat.”
In a moving performance, Hernàndez, a St. Margaret’s parent, sang “Hay Unos Ojos” alongside his daughter, a St. Margaret’s student, Melody Hernandez, grade 11.
Formed by Jóse Hernàndez in 1981, Sol de México has performed throughout the world, though they do not customarily perform at schools. Our students were clearly impressed by the performance and appreciative of the opportunity to watch this world-class group perform.
What advice does Hernandez have for students who are interested in musical performance? “Take it seriously and be passionate about what you do.”

What a magnificent performance it was!
They were the best of the best!!!! Listening to them was just one of my most fantastic experience.
Muchas gracias. Ole!!!!
I’ve seen The Rolling Stones, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, and many more. This was, by far, the most tremendous concert I’ve ever attended! Mr. Hernàndez must be entirely proud of his lovely and talented daughter, Melody. When they sang together, my eyes teared…as did the eyes of the ladies to my left and to my right. Mariachi Sol de México gifted SMES a fabulously fun event rich with culture! Many thanks for inviting parents.
