St. Margaret’s Girls Tennis Team Recognized by San Juan Capistrano City Hall
The St. Margaret’s Girls Tennis Team, along with Headmaster Marcus D. Hurlbut, Orange County Register Coach of the Year Coach Rick Trager and Coach Gretchen Miller, were honored with a Certificate of Recognition from the City of San Juan Capistrano on Thursday, during a meeting of the City Council.
The Mayor of San Juan Capistrano, the Honorable Dr. Londres Uso, who is also an alumni parent (Lonnie Uso, Class of 1989), and the City Council members invited the entire team forward to accept the certificate in recognition of their back-to-back CIF Championships, 2008 and 2009, and their two consecutive undefeated seasons.
At the open City Council meeting, community members, Tartans and their supporters all had gathered for the presentation of the certificate. Mayor Uso presented the document to Headmaster Hurlbut and Coach Trager, and the City Council and Mayor Uso posed with the team for this historic moment.
Mayor Uso had come to St. Margaret’s last month to congratulate the team and the school as a whole, along with three-time grand slam champion and Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Davenport. On that occasion, sporting a St. Margaret’s letterman jacket, Dr. Uso commended the team for their victory and also for their commitment to each other: “Winning one CIF Championship is an accomplishment on its own, but clinching two wins—on top of back-to-back undefeated seasons—is impressive on so many levels. The St. Margaret’s Girls Varsity Tennis team displayed talent and drive. The players showed outstanding sportsmanship. If you want to talk about the value of sports in lifting spirits, just watch the performances of Coach Rick Trager’s Girls Varsity Tennis team.”
