I had the opportunity to be a part of Harvard Model Congress in San Francisco late last month, with my fellow AP Government classmates. While we were all very nervous and did not know what to expect, this conference was a fun learning experience that we will never forget.

The Harvard Model Congress conference had many different model groups, such as the National Economic Council, House and Energy Commerce, Press Corps, Supreme Court, Foreign Affairs, G20 and many more. I was a part of the Press Corps, with one of my closest friends, Rachel Rohrer, grade 12. We had two chairmen, Nico Kirk-Giannini and Courtney Skinner, who are students at Harvard University. We were all assigned different “beats,” in which we had to write articles multiple times a day.

My beats were the Supreme Court and the National Economic Council. I wrote various articles, such as an editorial on the Health Care dilemma, and an education court case. While I was at my Supreme Court beat, I was able to use prior knowledge from this past semester’s Constitutional Law course taught by Headmaster Mr. Hurlbut.

When not at committee, my colleagues and I were able to explore San Francisco. We visited Fisherman’s Warf, Union Square, and North Beach. We also had a “delegate dance,” and I met many other students from all over the country, such as Tempe, Florida, and Austin, Texas. This was a great hands-on learning experience that I would recommend to all prospective AP Government students!
