pidayEvery year on March 14 (3.14), mathematicians around the nation celebrate Pi Day. At St. Margaret’s, grade 5 takes Pi very seriously, and on Pi Day especially, there is much celebration of 3.14, the ratio between diameter and circumference.

Students used hands-on centers to measure and calculate Pi, and they had opportunities to make color-coded bead necklaces corresponding to the first 43 digits of Pi, participate in memorization contests, read stories based on geometric terms, and more activities. At the end of the school day, parents came to the classroom to share Pi a la mode with their burgeoning mathematicians.

Top finishers in the contest to memorize the most digits of Pi were: Jack Westhead, with 215 digits; Nicole Brynjolfsson, with 205 digits; Charles Smith, with 184 digits; and Charlie Wiggs, with 160 digits.
