Highlander and Tartan Win National Awards!

Our very own community publications, Tartan newsletter and Highlander magazine, have both been nationally recognized for excellence.
Both publications won top awards in the 25th Annual Educational Advertising Awards competition. This is a well-respected national competition focused on marketing and communications materials designed specifically for the education sector. This year, more than 2,000 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries.
Tartan newsletter won a gold award (the highest award) in the newsletter category within all secondary schools. Gold awards …

Student Work Juried Into Prestigious National Ceramics Show

This week, work created by St. Margaret’s student Adam Holden, grade 11, was juried into the prestigious National K12 Ceramic Exhibition. The exhibit will be held in March at the 44th annual conference of the National Council on Education for Ceramic Art. Adam’s artwork, was selected from a group of more than 1,100 submitted works; fewer than 170 were juried into the show. Adam is the first St. Margaret’s student to have work selected for inclusion in this show.

Middle School Musicians Perform in State Honor Band

Band director Chris Carbajal and two Middle School students attended the Sixth Annual Southern California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) Honor Band Festival on February 5 and 6, at Viewpoint School in Calabasas, California.
David Krieger, grade 8, performed on baritone saxophone, and Jenna Frum, grade 8, played the flute. The band was conducted by Dr. Richard Kravchak, from California State University at Dominguez Hills. Prior to joining CSUDH, Dr. Kravchak was the Music Director at Canoga High School, where he and his bands received numerous awards and recognitions.

Two Tartan alumnae met again on the field last week, in a Division 1 college match pitting St. Mary’s freshman Anna Maria Carabini (St. Margaret’s Class of 2009), starting for the Gaels, against University of Denver sophomore Lauren Ciccomascolo (St. Margaret’s Class of 2008). Ciccomascolo scored four goals and two assists, earning Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week honors. Read more.

In the article “St. Margaret’s too strong for Sage Hill, 3-0,”  the OC Register reports on the team’s first place win in the Academy League. With a descriptions of key moments in the game, the article quotes Girls Soccer Coach Johnny Marmelstein, who said of the win, “We settled down and played the way that I know we’re capable of playing.”

St. Margaret’s Announces New Head Football Coach Rod Baltau

St. Margaret’s Episcopal School today announced the appointment of Assistant Head Football Coach Rod Baltau to Head Football Coach. Coach Baltau brings extensive high school football experience both as a coach and player, and has coached at St. Margaret’s since 2007.
In a team meeting this afternoon, Director of Athletics Susie Maga announced the news to the team players and coaching staff who erupted into spontaneous cheers, table pounding and applause for their new coach.

Spencer Corwin, grade 12, and his mother, Terry Corwin, have been featured in The Orange County Register for their work creating an organization for students seeking opportunities to give back to the community through service.
