Several St. Margaret’s athletes and coaches were honored this spring for making The Orange County Register’s All-County teams.
The Boys’ Lacrosse program had three team members honored, Seniors Chris Adams and Jeff Askin, and Sophomore Matthew Duenes. Adams, who is headed to University of California, Santa Barbara next year, was also named U.S. Lacrosse All-American Selection, a national distinction. Adams and Askin anchored the Tartan defense which allowed a mere 81 points in 21 games. Jeff Askin had a .693 save percentage, one of the highest in CIF …

Middle School Soccer Teams Sweep South County Friendship League Playoffs

The last week of May was an exciting and victorious week for both grade 6 St. Margaret’s co-ed soccer teams as they each captured the South County Friendship Championship trophy for their respective leagues. With two teams at the grade 6 level, the league placed one St. Margaret’s team in the Large School Division coached by Johnny Marmelstein and Lori Fava and the other in the Small School Division coached by Kelly Nunn and Rian Otto . Both teams competed against many skilled soccer teams representing schools in the league.

St. Margaret’s seventh grader Kenley Farace, won the Orange County Spelling Bee in February and heads to Washington D.C. next week to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Kenley was profiled in The Capistrano Dispatch and The Orange County Register this week.

Ryan Dahlem Everest Summit Bid This Sunday UPDATED!

Update: Tartan Ryan Dahlem on Top of the World!
Ryan Dahlem and his father John Dahlem reached the summit of Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world at 29,029 ft., Monday, May 24, 2010 at approximately 10 a.m. Nepal time (Sunday, May 23, 9 p.m. California time). We’ve received reports that they spent about 30 minutes on the summit before descending safely to the South Col. They will rest over night at Camp Four and then descend to Base Camp tomorrow. Two SMES Sophomores carried the day for the Tartans at the CIF Division 4 finals on Saturday.  Runner Billy Gaudreau and jumper Chelsie Churchill captured CIF championships in the Boys 1,600 and Girls Triple Jump respectively.

The Tartans nailed down their first championship in Boys Volleyball since 2001, defeating Arrowhead Christian 3-1.

Five SMES Students Win California Writing Awards

Five St. Margaret’s students have won awards in the California Writing Awards 2010 Scholastic Writing Awards Contest. Kristin Godfrey, grade 7, won a Silver Key award in the Short Story category, for “Multiple Blues.” Hanna Hurr, grade 12, won a Silver Key award in the Poetry category, for “The Valley.” Meaghan Hurr, grade 10, won a Merit Award in the Short Short Story category, for “A Glimpse of Athena.” Peighton McRobie, grade 7, won a Merit Award in the Humor category, for “Beauty in a Shopping Bag.” Alexis Salcido, grade …

St. Margaret’s alumnus Tain Lee (Class of 2008) has won the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship, held May 11–May 14, in Hershey, PA. Tain currently attends Claremont McKenna.

St. Margaret’s student Taylor Bayles, grade 12, recently wrote a Cappies review that was published in the OC Register. Taylor, part of the Cappies (Critics and Awards Program) team, reviewed “A View From the Bridge,” by Arthur Miller, performed at La Habra High School. Cappies student critics attend shows and write reviews, which are judged by volunteer teachers. Only the best reviews are selected for publication.

Jeff Askin, Emily Boone, and Woody Quinn Named Athletes of the Week

Lacrosse goalkeeper Jeff Askin, grade 12; lacrosse midfielder Emily Boone, grade 11; and volleyball player Woody Quinn, grade 12, have been named OCVarsity Athletes of the Week.
Emily Boone scored 38 points in six games. Read the OC Varsity article about Emily.
Jeff Askin was one of the key reasons St. Margaret’s captured the Trinity League title with a 10-0 record, according to Coach Gerry Manning. Read the OC Varsity article about Jeff.
