St. Margaret’s Seventh Grader Wins OC Spelling Bee

Kenley Farace, a seventh grader at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School, won the Orange County Spelling Bee and will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in early June, an event televised by ESPN.

Kenley competed against 70 other local students, the largest field in Orange County history, and triumphed in round 13 with the word “secessionist” first to edge out the remaining contender and then with “evulsion,” meaning to pull out or to extract, to capture the trophy.

Tartans Win Gavels at Harvard Model Congress

Last week, seven St. Margaret’s seniors attended the 10th annual Harvard Model Congress simulation in San Francisco. Harvard Model Congress San Francisco has long carried a proud tradition of teaching youths about the intricacies of American government through hands-on simulations and debates. Beginning last September with the student’s request for roles, these seven students worked hard to prepare themselves for these four days of intense government simulation, in which they excelled.

From Crochet to Pumpernickel, Spelling Bee Participants Excel

Last week, St. Margaret’s Middle School participated in the school level of the nation’s largest spelling bee. Students from grades 6, 7, and 8 took the first round of spelling bee quizzes in their English classes to determine grade level winners. The top spellers in each grade gathered in the Campaigne Center on Friday, January 15, in front of their classmates, teachers and families, to compete for the top three positions in St. Margaret’s 17th Annual Middle School Spelling Bee.
