Holding practice on handball courts and in gyms, wearing hand me down football jerseys as uniforms and soldiering through a 0-10 inaugural season, Tartan Lacrosse had humble beginnings as a junior varsity intramural club. With a roster of only 12 Upper School athletes, two eighth graders and a senior “assistant coach” who played for University High School in Irvine, the Tartans struggled against large public schools with rosters of 30-plus athletes. Not only had many of the Tartans never played the game, but few had ever heard of the predominantly east-coast sport.

Several St. Margaret’s athletes and coaches were honored this spring for making The Orange County Register’s All-County teams.
The Boys’ Lacrosse program had three team members honored, Seniors Chris Adams and Jeff Askin, and Sophomore Matthew Duenes. Adams, who is headed to University of California, Santa Barbara next year, was also named U.S. Lacrosse All-American Selection, a national distinction. Adams and Askin anchored the Tartan defense which allowed a mere 81 points in 21 games. Jeff Askin had a .693 save percentage, one of the highest in CIF …

The last week of May was an exciting and victorious week for both grade 6 St. Margaret’s co-ed soccer teams as they each captured the South County Friendship Championship trophy for their respective leagues. With two teams at the grade 6 level, the league placed one St. Margaret’s team in the Large School Division coached by Johnny Marmelstein and Lori Fava and the other in the Small School Division coached by Kelly Nunn and Rian Otto . Both teams competed against many skilled soccer teams representing schools in the league.

The Tartan Athletic program added three CIF Championships to its collection last Saturday. The Boys Volleyball team won a second CIF title in St. Margaret’s history with a 16-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Arrowhead Christian. In other CIF finals on Saturday, Sophomores Chelsie Churchill and Billy Gaudreau each won CIF titles in their individual Track and Field events.
The Tartan volleyball team, seeded # 2, reached the 2010 finals without dropping a game during the playoffs. They were led by seniors Woody Quinn, Kory Kiraly, Alex Fragapane and Kevin Wang. …

Two SMES Sophomores carried the day for the Tartans at the CIF Division 4 finals on Saturday. Runner Billy Gaudreau and jumper Chelsie Churchill captured CIF championships in the Boys 1,600 and Girls Triple Jump respectively.

The Tartans nailed down their first championship in Boys Volleyball since 2001, defeating Arrowhead Christian 3-1.

The St. Margaret’s Boys Volleyball team has capped another outstanding season reaching the CIF Championship game for the second year in a row. Seeded second in CIF, the Tartans have easily reached the final match by sweeping each of their opponents during playoffs. Last night’s victory over Vistamar High School 25-16, 25-21, and 25-18 set-up the championship match against Arrowhead Christian the number four seed.
Come out to support the Tartans and wear your Tartan blue on Saturday May 22 at 1:30 pm at Cypress College.

The number-two seeded Boys Volleyball team has reached the Quarterfinals of CIF Playoffs and will play Summit High School this Saturday, May 15, at 7 p.m. in the Pasternack Field House.
After capturing Academy League Championships in both Boys and Girls Track and Field, St. Margaret’s had 16 athletes qualify for CIF. They will compete in Carpinteria, on Saturday May 15.
The Baseball team qualified for CIF playoffs for the first time in three years and will start play Thursday, May 20. More information to follow on the St. Margaret’s Athletics …

Come cheer on the Tartans as they take on perennial powerhouse Foothill in the Boys US Lacrosse Southern Section Championship this Saturday, May 8, at San Clemente High School at 2:30 p.m.
The Tartans, who closed out the year as undefeated Trinity League champions, bring a 15-2 season record up against the 15-4 Foothill Knights. This promises to be an close fought game on the road to the championship game next week.
Wear your Tartan colors and support the team this Saturday!
