Dear Friends,
In 2008 my husband Duraid, our two children, and I opened our home to our first Breakthrough teacher. He was a 20-year-old college student who stayed with us for two months. We were pleased to welcome him into our home, a young man who was visibly enthusiastic about the journey he embarked upon. It was a pleasure watching him make progress with his students, working diligently to ensure they were getting the most out of Breakthrough and all it had to offer. Each class had to create a different business. Our D Block class has created a discount card, the “Plaid Card” with the proceeds of this card going to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization.

Thanks to all who participated, St. Margaret’s donated almost 5,000 books recently, as noted in “Caring Kids Communities.” The book drive was part of Celebrating Community, the school-wide community service celebration of St. Margaret’s 30th year. The article provides information about where the books went, and how to donate books if you did not have the opportunity during the book drive. The article emphasizes the event’s contribution to the local community, including hand-woven baskets donated to the local Native American Acjachemen Nation, flowers donated to Brighton Gardens, and fresh produce donated to Father Serra’s Pantry. Come out to support our St. Margaret’s Tartan Varsity Lacrosse team when they face the Santa Margarita Eagles in a highly anticipated Trinity League matchup Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Mission Viejo High School. Both teams are highly ranked, and previous encounters have resulted in hard-fought battles.
The game will be televised as the “Game of the Week” on Cox 3 on Saturday, April 17, and Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m.

Thank you to all the donors and volunteers who made the March 24 Red Cross blood drive at St. Margaret’s a success! Your hard work helped to collect 45 units of blood. The blood drive brought us up to a total of 78 units for the year, which will help save up to 234 lives.

Last Saturday, the streets of historic downtown San Juan Capistrano were lined with thousands of families gathered to watch the 52nd annual Swallows’ Day Parade. St. Margaret’s has participated for more than 20 years in this celebration of the swallows, which is the nation’s largest non-motorized parade. St. Margaret’s has also been a proud supporter of the parade as a division sponsor for more than 10 years. This year, St. Margaret’s was the Parade Sponsor. Throughout the parade, St. Margaret’s Girl Scouts troupe member volunteers carried Division and other banners.

Last Saturday, hundreds filled the St. Margaret’s campus, supporting the Lemon-Fest community fair and concert to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti. This student-led event raised more than $11,000. At the fair, there were booths to decorate lemon cookies, buy a yellow friendship bracelet or hair ribbon crafted by the cheerleaders, and toss a pie at a Lower School teacher, as well as an extensive offering of goods baked by the Middle School for sale.
